Well, that's a smart question, and the clear answer is a big "YES". Anyone can hack your smartphone and read your texts using their phone, computer, or by installing an app on your phone. These days, there are several software and applications which anyone can use to monitor your device and track your activities. Want to know how? Keep reading and you'll get your answers to the question "Can someone hack my phone and read my texts?"

Part 1. How Can Your Phone Be Hacked By Others?

1. Hack a phone using Stingray or IMSI Catcher

Stingray, False Towers, or the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identifier), this method has several names.

An IMSI catcher is the devices that spoof to be an authentic cell phone tower intercepting signals in your area. An IMSI catcher can spot individual target mobile phones and easily hack your data – messages, calls, locations, etc.  While these devices are mostly used by law enforcement, they have now become popular among detective and private investigators.

Using an IMSI catcher, hackers can hack a phone to read texts. IMSI catchers are available in the market, starting at $1500.

2. Hack a phone connected to Wi-Fi Network

Did you know? A mobile phone connected to the  Wi-Fi network can be easily hacked. However, that is only possible if someone has complete control over the Wi-Fi point. If he readily has access to the Wi-Fi point, he can track the traffic on the device and get all the information he needs using a set of special tools.

Using this method, the hacker can only hack a mobile phone which is connected to his Wi-Fi hotspot. If the text messages are sent using the cellular network's internet, he won't be able to track them.

3. Hack a phone using gaps in SIM card

Another way of hacking someone's phone and reading text messages is using gaps in SIM card protection to accomplish the task. However, you must know that not every SIM card is hackable. Research shows that only 25% of mobile SIM cards are hackable. Also, this method is not as easy as the other methods and requires special skills and knowledge to be performed.

Part 2. How to Tell If Your Phone is Hacked

Not sure whether your phone is hacked by someone? Don't worry, we'll help you identify the real picture. If you notice any of the following, you can be sure that your phone is under a hack attack!

1.  Unknown new apps are installed on your phone

While your phone may get updated from time to time with new apps from the manufacturer,  if you notice some new apps that look suspicious, it's definitely something to worry about. As soon as you come across one of these apps, perform a quick Google search and check the credentials of the app. If the app is a malware, you will come across different communities and forums talking about a situation like yours.

2. Your phone is suddenly sending or receiving text messages

If you get a call from someone close saying that they've received a weird message from your phone, it's time for action!

If you observe a sudden spike in data usage by one or more third-party apps on your phone or increased text message activity, there are high chances that your phone is under a malware attack and the malware is transmitting information from your device.

3. You are troubled by disruptions during calls

Are you facing a tough time with call drops, inability to receive calls or make calls, annoying noises during calls, and weak signal on your phone? Well, don't sit relaxed thinking it's a technical issue, it might be a malware attack.

4. Your phone battery is draining fast

Just saw your battery on 90% and within minutes, it dropped to 45%? Alert, your phone maybe under a malware attack!

How to Protect Your Phone from Being Hacked?

Now that we've answered your major question – can someone hack my phone and read my texts,  it's time to help you fight with the hack attack and take necessary measures to prevent your phone from being hacked.

Here are 3 ways in which you can protect your phone from potential hack attacks:

Tip 1. Ensure your operating system is latest and up-to-date

As soon as you get a nudge from Android or Apple to update your operating system, don't act lazy and sit on it. Download the latest version and install it on your device. Outdated operating systems are at a high risk of getting hacked.

Tip 2. Protect your Android device or iPhone  with a passcode

A passcode is a must for your phone – whether it is Android or an iPhone. Pick a passcode which is difficult to crack. Avoid using your birth date, anniversary date, or other predictable patterns.

If you have an iPhone, you can pick a 4-digit, 6-digit, or alpha-numeric passcode. Whereas, for an Android phone, you can use a numeric password, a 4-digit pin, an alphanumeric code, or an unlock pattern (most recommended). You can pick a  password by opening Settings>Security>Screen Lock.

Tip 3. Guard your phone with a security software

You can also protect your Android phone against malware by installing a security software like Avast, McAfee (most recommended), or Norton. In the case of an iPhone,  you can protect the device by using the methods mentioned above.

As it is rightly said, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Now when you know that your Android or iOS device can be easily hacked, and anyone can read your text messages, you must take timely action and protect your phone against malware and malicious hack attacks using any of the 3 incredible methods mentioned above.
